A Friend is a Friend
Decades ago I met this lad
Near the close of teenage years.
We both were young and eager then,
Still wet behind the ears.
To go to war we came to train
On a distant campus green,
Anxious to get into the fray
On a far off battle scene.
Fate then decreed our ways should split.
To different sites we went.
Our paths then failed to cross until
The wartime years were spent.
Then on another campus green
In the west we met again.
To continue our education plans
And new lives to begin.
Then winds of war once more blew strong,
And recall of trained reserves
Then beckoned both to Korea come
To again our country serve.
Together now we flew and fought
In this far off Asian war,
Proud to help save our brother troops
At the Chosin Reservoir.
Returned we then to pre war lives
To follow each his goal,
But memories neer to be forgot
Were burned in each man’s soul.
That friendship sparked so long ago
Is still aflame today.
It did not burn out oer the years
Or fade along the way.
How can we say that we’re still friends?
Four and fifty years have passed.
I guess it’s finally safe to say
This friendship’s meant to last.
